Perlis Indera Kayangan, or more commonly known as Perlis is the smallest state in Malaysia. Perlis is situated at the Northern most part of Peninsular Malaysia. It is bordered on the North by Thailand, the East and South by Kedah, and on the West by the Straits of Melaka.The capital of Perlis is Kangar, and depending on the season, Kangar is surrounded by lush green fields or golden yellow paddy.Even though Perlis is the smallest state in Malaysia, it does not lose out to other states in terms of tourism attractiveness. Perlis is a pleasant and excellent destination for tourists who want to experience the slower-paced, laid-back rural lifestyle.With her expansive green paddy plains punctuated occasionally by limestone mounds and picturesque natural setting, you would definitely enjoy the "back to nature" feeling that a lot of city folks yearn for.There are quite a number of interesting places to visit in Perlis.   Gua Kelam Recreation Park
 


Perlis is home to the Gua Kelam Recreation Park, one of the most interesting recreation parks in Malaysia. Situated about one kilometer from the peaceful town of Kaki Bukit, Northwest of Perlis, Gua Kelam (when translated to English means "Cave of Darkness") is believed to have been hollowed out from a limestone massif by an underground stream over many eons. Inside this cave is a 370 metre long cave passage. A wooden walkway suspended along the entire length of the well-lit passage allows visitors to view the magnificently formed stalactites and stalagmites. Near the entrance of the cave is a recreational park which has a tourist information centre, food stalls and water sports facilities.



Snake and Reptile Farm
 

Another interesting Perlis travel spot is the Snake and Reptile Farm which is located 10 km north of Kangar and it is surrounded by the Bukit Bintang Forest Reserve near Sungai Batu Pahat. This farm was formerly a research facility set up to develop serums for treatment of snakebites. The farm has open air enclosures as well as closed exhibits and is home to over 34 species of snakes, crocodiles, iguanas and monitor lizards.



 Perlis State Park

The other Perlis travel destination worth mentioning here is the Perlis State Park. The state park stretches along the longest continuous range of limestone hills in the country, located in the North-Western part of the Malaysian-Thai border. The park is the perfect place for activities such as caving, bird watching, jungle trekking and hiking. Species of animals such as the stumped-tail Macaque and plants like ginger, ferns and balsams endemic to the state are also found here. If you wish to spend more time here enjoying the "back to nature" feeling, you could stay here in the hostels and chalets, or if you are the outdoor type, you could even choose to camp at the designated sites at the park.
 


Chuping Sugar Cane Plantation

Another Perlis travel spot worth visiting is the Chuping Sugar Cane Plantation. Named after Bukit Chuping (Chuping Hill), a limestone hill, the landscape here is filled with endless tracts of lush green sugar cane plantations covering some 22,000 hectares. The seemingly endless expanse of the sugar cane plantation is really an amazing sight. When you're here, you can visit a museum to learn more about the sugar manufacturing processes. A tour around the museum would definitely be an eye-opener if you are interested to find out how sugar is made from cane.


 
Tasik Melati

The other Perlis travel spot you should visit is Tasik Melati (Melati Lake). This picturesque man-made lake has about 150 islets. The water here is crystal clear so much so that you can actually see the bottom of the lake just by looking into the water. Boating is the favourite activity here and you can take a sampan (small Malay boat) from one islet to another. Besides that, there is also a network of elevated walkways over the water which provides vantage viewpoints for visitors. There is also a playground with pavements painted with Disney characters here at Lake Melati. This playground would definitely provide children with a real fun time!
